And it is indispensable that each tag MUST have artwork. If a song comes on the iPod and I see no cover art, it upsets me a little. And I'm not normally OCD. I hate tagging in iTunes. So many hours down the drain organizing my music. I have found MediaMonkey to be great for filling in tag and artwork info for commercial records (but I suffer from the same problems you do with all my indie and other obscure tracks). I often like to listen to music from a certain decade, so I've used the "genre" slot for 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. Easily allows me to pick a decade/genre for playing. I share your obsession!
