Hmph Day, Late Edition: KanYe, Others Are Gettin’ Sued!

Courtesy of Paste Magazine: The daughter of saxophonist Joe Farrell is filing suit against rappers KanYe West, Common, Method Man and Redman. The suit alleges that the artists used her father’s composition “Upon This Rock” without permission.

The artists recorded three different songs with the offending sample. And according to The-Breaks.com, 11 other artists sample this same song.

This is amazing. Why can’t these artists come up with an original melody - you know, like a song? Paste argues that the artists are paying homage to the originators of the tunes; I call it lazy.

At least Vanilla Ice changed his sample:  Remember his explanation for stealing from Queen’s “Under Pressure”?

“Theirs goes, ‘Ding ding ding dingy ding-ding.’ Ours goes, ‘Ding ding ding ding dingy ding-ding.’”
