Hmph Day: The Clark Brothers
I had just gotten the Clark Brothers’ horrid, whiny honky-tonk cacophony out of my head, lingering from their performances on “The Next Great American Band” - which they inexplicably won - when they emerged again on “American Idol” last week.
How a band - the “Next Great American Band” - can butcher a gospel classic such as “This Little Light of Mine” is beyond me, but I watched them do it last week. Gone was the recognizable tune, replaced by an off-key, strained monotone by Adam/Ashley/Austin (don’t know which one). Ashley/Austin/Adam’s Dobro playing sounded suspiciously like a cat screeching on a carousel. When you play any instrument that has a tendency to slide around the note, it can give you free rein to play anything within a certain margin of error, and you can’t really tell whether they’re playing the right notes. Such was the case with the Brothers Clark.
And at some points, all three of them seemed to be playing their instruments at different tempos, seemingly oblivious to each other. But they played loud. Oh boy, did they.
How did everyone else react? Well, Idolator Wwas relatively nice, calling it “kinda manic” but “OK.” But it did notice the reactions of several Idol contestants and - er, hosts. Here’s Ryan Seacrest during the performance:

Here’s contestant Brooke White:
My reaction? Hmph.
