Dear Muxtape: Search, please!
I’ve been fiddling with the new web 2.0-ish app Muxtape, which allows members to upload digital mixtapes onto the Internets, and then have them available to stream (over the Internets) to curious listeners. The site has all the bells and whistles of web 2.0 goodness – lots of colors, big fonts and some semblance of social interaction. This is so close to the perfect app for me, but it inexplicably has no search.
This, I assume, is to dissuade the Recording Police from any legal action (“Hey, honest, we just host playlists. It’s not like we help people find it…”). But you have to click on each listener to see what they have on their mixtape, and not every mixtape is available from the front page. If it cycles off, you’re out of luck unless someone sends you a URL.
That means wading through a lot of El Guincho, Zurdok and Nuclear Bubble Wrap (No, I’m not making these up) to find anything of value. And having just spent days going through 764 artists from SXSW, I’m in no mood to browse.
I just want to find someone out there who has Siouxsie & the Banshees’ “The Last Beat of My Heart” on their mixtape, and find out what else they included. I want to know what else goes good with “Solar Sister” by the Posies.
Pandora uses algorithms to find recommended songs. Last.fm uses entire iTunes libraries sometimes. I just wanna make it easier to poke other people’s mixtapes. But until that comes along, I’ll keep skimming through Zombie Girl and Boyz Noize to find something good.
UPDATE: Ooh, just found one with Colin Hay and Death Cab for Cutie. Now that one I might like…
